Fellowships

The Lewis Center for the Arts, in collaboration with other University departments, offers a number of artist fellowship opportunities.

Princeton Arts Fellowship

Funded in part by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, David E. Kelley ’79 Society of Fellows Fund, and the Maurice R. Greenberg Scholarship Fund.

Open to early-career artists whose achievements have been recognized as demonstrating extraordinary promise. Princeton Arts Fellows spend two consecutive academic years (September 1-July 1) at Princeton University and formal teaching is expected. The normal work assignment will be to teach one course each semester subject to approval by the Dean of the Faculty, but fellows may be asked to take on an artistic assignment in lieu of a class, such as directing a play or creating a dance with students. Although the teaching load is light, our expectation is that Fellows will be full and active members of our community, committed to frequent and engaged interactions with students during the academic year.

Online applications for the Princeton Arts Fellowship are now closed. The next application cycle will open in July 2026.

Hodder Fellowship

The Mary Mackall Gwinn Hodder Fellowship program is funded by the Charles John Morris Gwinn and Alfred Hodder Memorial Fund.

Open to artists demonstrating “much more than ordinary intellectual and literary gifts.” Fellows are selected more “for promise than for performance.” Fellowships are for one academic year and provide the opportunity to pursue an independent project. No teaching is required. A stipend is provided.

Online applications for the Hodder Fellowship are now closed. The next application cycle will open in July 2026.

The Next Forever Artist Fellows

Princeton University’s High Meadows Environmental Institute, Lewis Center for the Arts, and New York City-based theater company The Civilians annually provide two artist residencies at Princeton. The Next Forever provides forward-thinking artists unparalleled access to a cross-disciplinary range of knowledge and ideas. The initiative supports artists as they pursue rigorous inquiry into their subject matter alongside some of Princeton’s greatest thinkers and funds a series of commissions of theatrical work that offer new visions for how humanity relates to the world around it.

The partnership seeks to create new stories for a changing planet, exploring how dynamic storytelling can engage vital environmental subjects and provide the vision and inspiration society needs to navigate the challenges of our planet’s future — the “next forever.” Next Forever artists spend time on the Princeton University campus as guest artists, engage with faculty and students, and participate in an ongoing series of public events and performances over the course of a year-long residency and two-year commissioning agreement.
